Here Lies the Heart...Mercedes de Acosta
|
Mercedes de Acosta is often overlooked in Hollywood history; she was not a famous actress, in fact not an actress at all. Her ideas, too feminist for Hollywood big-shots (it was the 1930s, after all), were hardly ever used for movies. Though she made a few contributions to timeless movies featuring her close "friend" Greta Garbo (it is highly speculated that the two were lovers), not much of her work is seen.
Yet she was more than a screenwriter for Hollywood films. She wrote poetry, she was one of the first feminists, therefore paving the way for many future generations of women to come. She befriended artists, actors and actresses in both theater and film, and was sister to the beautiful Rita de Acosta Lydig. She had intimate relationships with Marlene Dietrich, Eva LeGallienne, Greta Garbo, Alla Nazimova, Isadora Duncan, among [many] others. When she published her autiobiography, entitled Here Lies the Heart, many of the former intimates were shocked an appalled at her complete honesty.
